Auction Edition corals

A Tropical Reef Oasis Exclusive!!

Reeffarmers Auction Edition

Auctioned Edition Corals from Reeffarmers.com are very rare and very exotic corals that are distributed on an auction basis only. Typically these rare organisms produce only a specific amount of offspring per year. The scheduled auctions for each captive grown fragment are listed on the corals web page linked below. Our current plans are to only add a few new Auctioned Editions every year. All winning auction bidders are bound to the auction restrictions displayed on the corals Tropical Reef Oasis auction page. Auction Transactions occur between the winning bidders and Tropical Reef Oasis. Reeffarmers will ship the coral as required by the auction agreement with Tropical Reef Oasis. Winning bids need to be paid within 48 hours of the auction ending. Coral delivery must be accepted within 7 days of full payment being recieved. Reeffarmers.com will ship all Auctioned Edition Fragments within Igloo Coolers to help ensure their safe arrival. Orders must be either delivered by hand locally or shipped via Federal Express next day hold for pickup.

Auction Edition Ponape Echinophyllia echinoporides

May 4, 2005

Reeffarmers initially recieved this coral at the Reeffarmers facility during the first week of July 2003. At that time Bill Schroer was working as a collector for a Ponape export operation. This coral was within the last group of corals Bill collected and delivered to Reeffarmers. We maintained the coral for about a month and then in an obvious moment of weakness, we sent the entire fragment to a private collector in Texas for safe keeping. At that time the demand for exotically colored Echinophyllia sp. was relatively weak and we had very little space available within our facility. When Reeffarmers initially recieved the coral it was colored red with pink highlights (see image below). After about a month in captivity the main background of the coral developed a blue white coloration with pink and red highlights (see image below). The tips of papillae and corallite ridges were colored red and pink. Upon close examination the coral was bluish with red dots and lines. It was at this time that we sent the coral to Texas for safe keeping. We were in constant contact with the collector and decided in early 2005 to acquire a fragment of this coral back to the reeffarmers facility. While in Texas the coral was never fragmented and was maintained in relatively weak light levels. In this light the corals growth was slow and the surface developed a bluish white background with red dots and lines (see image below). Red lines can develop towards the edges of this colony that radiate outward toward the edge (see image above). Corallite centers are pink with red highlights (see image above). Steve Tyree carried and transported this coral back from Texas on an airline flight. Within the reeffarmers facility the coral is currently being exposed to moderate light levels. The background Blue White color has become more Blue and reddish dots and lines are devleoping more fully. There also appears to be some exotic pigment patterns within the corallite areas. This coral has the potential to develop some absolutely incredibly colored patterns as it forms new encrusting and massive plate growths. Steve Tyree is maintaining a farmed section of this coral for reeffarmers.com in one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal Reef Aquariums. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positoned to recieve moderate light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. The Auctioned Edition opening bid for each new auction is currently $175 per small sized fragment. The bimonthly auctioned edition auction schedules can be found below. When we began auctioning this coral there were only two known people within the entire U.S. who have this particular exotic color morph from Ponape. Reeffarmers has the one imaged above, while a private collector in Texas retains half of the colony imaged below. That private collector was the Keeper of the Coral from the Fall of 2003 until March 2005.

Agent Orange Main Colony of John Lucero (badmort) May 2005

Auctioned Edition Agent Orange

June 1, 2005

This incredibly colorful Reef Building Stony Coral was originally purchased by John Lucero (badmort) from a retailer in Pasadena California. One day John recieved a call from the owner of the Reef Shop Pasadena Tropical Fish. The owner told John that he had recently acquired a very interesting coral from Indonesia. Pasadena Tropical Fish also happens to be the store that Steve Tyree purchased his very first Acropora stony coral from back in 1992. This new massive stony coral that John purchased from Pasadena Tropical Fish has a brilliant orange coloration with green corallite centers. While in captivity the orange can at times appear more pinkish. Images taken of the coral through the front glass actually make the coral look more brilliant pink. Images of the coral from above the surface make the coral appear brilliant orange. While in captivity the coral has also added many spots or areas with different pigments. The closeup images show that the coral has orange, pink, reddish, blue, yellow and green. This coral is called Agent Orange because of its brilliant orange coloration. Overall however it appears to be a brilliant multicolored Acanthastrea subechinata species of stony coral. The corals coloration is similar to the Limited Edition Echinophyllia aspera, but instead of a green primary color, Agent Orange has a brilliant orange primary color. There are also numerous patches of pink and some patches of blue, which the LE Echinophyllia aspera does not have. Steve Tyree is maintaining a farmed section of this coral for reeffarmers.com in one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal Reef Aquariums. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positoned to recieve moderate to weak light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. The Auctioned Edition opening bid for each new auction is currently $175 per small sized fragment. The bimonthly auctioned edition auction schedules can be found below. When we began auctioning this coral there were only two known people within the entire U.S. who have this agent orange multi-color morph. John Lucero has the original colony. John provided Reeffarmers with its First Edition Auctioned fragment and the Seed Colony which will grow additional Auctioned Editions.

Montastrea sp. ReefEnvy Strawberry Seed Colony July 7th 2005

Auctioned Edition Montastrea sp.
ReefEnvy Strawberry

July 25, 2005

This Pink colored Montastrea sp. coral has developed into one of the most incredibly colored reef building stony corals. When we initially recieved our fragment of this coral it was colored red pink. The initial seed fragment was heavily stressed from next day shipping across the US. The coral was sent to us by Juan-Carlos Munoz from Florida who purchased the colony from a retail reef shop located in Florida. Juan-Carlos plans on selling fragments of the mother colony in the future through a web site that is currently under construction www.ReefEnvy.com We do not know which species this is and we are assuming it came from the Pacific Ocean since the coral was on display and for sale within a US retail reef shop. The corallites on this Montastrea are very large, but the corals coloration pattern, pink with green stripes, is unknown. As Reeffarmers maintained this coral within our captive reef, there were distinctive coloration changes that are demonstrated within the images below. The red pink color morphed to a changing pink to orange colored hue. Also green lines developed and radiate outward from the corallite mouths. The polyp mouth has a bright pink inner ring. The insides of the mouth are blue to pink in color. Corallites can also extend large polyps during the night time photo period. Juan-Carlos has named this coral the 'ReefEnvy Strawberry Montastrea'. This name actually fits the morph of the seed fragment we have at Reeffarmers. The green radiating lines that have developed can represent the green leafy part of a strawberry. We have recently been adapting the coral to more moderate light levels. The Auctioned Edition opening bid for each new auction is currently $175 per small sized fragment. Each fragment will consist of an adult large corallite with 1 to 2 daughter polyps attached. The bimonthly auctioned edition auction schedules can be found below. Reeffarmers plans on producing bimonthly auctioned fragments of this coral. We also will distribute 2-3 fragments of this coral during 2005 as trades for other AE corals. When we first posted this web page on July 25th 2005, no fragments had been distributed by Reeffarmers.

Montastrea curta Dragons Eye Upscales 7 year old Initial Colony August 20th 2005

Auctioned Edition Montastrea curta
Upscales Dragons Eye

September 1, 2005

While on a trip to Portland to make a presentation to the Pacific Northwest Marine Aquarium Society, Steve Tyree went on some coral hunting side trips and made a visit to the Portland area Reef Store Upscales. www.upscales.com Steve was shown the stores two main reefs by Travis Heidt. There were numerous exotic stony coral colonies and many were rare. In one of the reefs Steve spotted an incredibly colorful coral that Travis had kept and grown for 7 years. The coral was originally exported from Jakarta Indonesia. Its initially appears as a Favia type brain coral that possesses an incredible coloration pattern. After a few minutes of observation Steve believed it to be a Montastrea curta. Travis also thought the coral was a M. curta. The coral has a very unique concentric ring coloration pattern. The corallite centers are deep red which changes to bright orange in a middle concentric ring. The outer edge of the corallite has a unique spotted cream white coloration. The corallite mouths are pink. These patterns give the coral a very striking appearence. Montastrea curta can be found in the book Corals of the World Volume 3 Page 216. The concentric ring pattern can also be seen in the Montastrea curta pictured in Corals of Australia and the Indo-Pacific page 504 Image 1. Another possibility is that this could be a Barabattoia amicorum (Corals of the World Volume 3 Page 133). Travis Heidt has named this coral the 'Dragons Eye' due to its unique concentric ring coloration (see image below). Travis believes the coral requires weak currents and moderate to low light. The Auctioned Edition opening bid for each new auction is currently $175 per small sized fragment. Each fragment will consist of an adult corallite 10 to 15 mm in diameter.

Please note - Auctioned Editions will only be distributed via auctioning through Tropical Reef Oasis. Reeffarmers.com will not sell any fragments of this coral as surplus or as a cancelled item. No fragments of this coral will be traded on the side by Reeffarmers for Limited Edition Corals. We do reserve the right however to possibly trade a fragment of this coral to help acquire a new Auctioned Edition coral. When First Edition Reeffarmers Auctions occur, about 50 % of the auction price will go to the farmer that delivered this coral to the reeffarmers.com facility. We do this in gratitude to reef farmers who have chosen to sell their rare corals through the Reeffarmers Auctioned Edition (AE) distribution network. After this First Edition Auction the coral becomes a normal Auctioned Edition each month where Reeffarmers.com earns each bimonthlys auction income by growing the captive fragment. Tropical Reef Oasis will always recieve an auctioning fee for each auction. The Reeffarmers facility is closed to the public and available by appointment only.
